History of APPA

Foundation and Early Years (1986-2014)

The Andhra Pradesh Police Academy (APPA) was established in 1986 as a premier institution dedicated to training law enforcement officers, forensic scientists, and public prosecutors. The foundation stone was ceremoniously laid by the then Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao, with visionary leadership from C. Anjaneya Reddy, IPS (Retd.), who played an instrumental role in bringing this academy to fruition.

Strategically located on approximately 175 acres amid the scenic hillocks of Himayat Sagar, roughly 25 kilometers from Hyderabad along the Hyderabad–Vikarabad road, the academy became a beacon of excellence in police training. Distinguished police officers including A.V. Subba Rao, H.J. Dora, M.V. Krishna Rao, Jaspal Singh, A.K. Mohanty, and M. Ratan contributed significantly to its growth and development.

Leadership and Achievements (2006-2014)

Dr. C.N. Gopi Natha Reddy, IPS, assumed the role of Director on May 19, 2006, marking a new chapter in the academy's leadership. Later, Naduri Sambasiva Rao, IPS, took over as Director from March 22, 2010, continuing the tradition of excellence.

By December 2012, the academy had achieved remarkable milestones, training 92,668 personnel through 2,695 induction and in-service courses. The academy's influence extended beyond Andhra Pradesh, serving police forces from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Tripura, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Lakshadweep. Notable achievements include training 8,475 personnel across 263 courses in 2006, 8,020 in 2007, and a record 10,580 trainees in 270 courses in 2009.

International Recognition & Collaboration

The academy gained international recognition through its collaboration with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It successfully trained 4,396 police personnel and prosecuting officers on specialized topics including human trafficking crimes. This initiative earned appreciation from UNODC representatives and officials from the U.S. Department of Justice, establishing APPA as a globally recognized training institution.

Post-Bifurcation Era (2014 - Present)

Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the original academy became part of Telangana and was subsequently renamed the Raja Bahadur Venkat Rama Reddy (RBVRR) Telangana State Police Academy. In April 2016, the Government of Andhra Pradesh officially designated the Police Training College (PTC) in Ananthapuramu as the temporary State-Level Police Academy.

The PTC at Anantapur brings a rich legacy, originally established as the Police Recruits School in 1917 and upgraded to the Police Training College in 1955. This facility now conducts comprehensive induction and in-service training for officers ranging from IPS and SP levels to Sub-Inspectors, maintaining the highest standards of police education.

Future Vision

Plans for a new permanent academy are underway, with land already identified in Guntur, Tirupati, and Visakhapatnam—over 250 acres each—for constructing a modern Andhra Pradesh Police Academy. These initiatives reflect the state's unwavering commitment to police capacity building and excellence in law enforcement training in the post-bifurcation era.
